What is Clindamycin Cream?

Clindamycin cream is an internal antibiotic cream used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (or BV), which is a common type of bacterial infection of the vagina. Many women will seek or be prescribed it in treatment of BV whereas in other women it can disappear of its own accord.

Bacterial vaginosis is a typically harmless infection that affects a large number of women throughout their lifetime. 50% of all women with BV will notice no symptoms, but the most common symptoms are a grey-white or yellow discharge and a smelly or ‘fishy’ odour from the vagina.

How should it be taken?

Clindamycin Cream is for insertion into the vagina only. Do not apply it externally to the skin or into any other part of your body.

Your treatment pack will include 7 tubes of Clindamycin cream and 7 disposable plastic applicators. This is one full course of treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis. Insert one tube of cream into the vagina once a day for 7 consecutive days, using the applicators provided, unless advised otherwise by your prescribing nurse, doctor or pharmacist. We recommend inserting the cream just before going to bed.

Always follow the specific instructions of your nurse or doctor if you have been prescribed this medication. In the absence of this, follow the directions below:

  • Remember to wash your hands before and immediately after using the cream
  • Remove the cap from one 5mg tube of cream
  • Screw one of the disposable applicators onto the tube in place of the removed cap
  • Squeeze the tube of cream gently so that the cream is forced into the applicator (the plunger will stop moving once the applicator is full)
  • Unscrew the applicator and insert as far as is comfortable into the vagina
  • Slowly push the applicator plunger until all the cream has been inserted into the vagina
  • Dispose of the used applicator and empty tube
  • Repeat this daily for 7 consecutive days of treatment, even if you think the infection has cleared

Who can use it?

You should only use this cream after having been diagnosed as having bacterial vaginosis by a nurse, doctor, online doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not use this product?

You should not use Clindamycin Cream if you are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients listed below, such as clindamycin. Neither should you use this medicine if you have a history of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) or anti-biotic associated colitis.

Clindamycin Cream is also not recommended for use in children, or for use by women in the first three months of pregnancy. Always tell your prescribing nurse, doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a baby before using Clindamycin Cream. If you are breastfeeding and using the cream and either you or your baby develop severe and/or blood-stained diarrhoea, or show any signs of illness, seek immediate medical attention and stop breastfeeding in the meantime.

Dosage

Insert one full tube of clindamycin cream into your vagina once daily for 7 consecutive days, unless instructed otherwise by your prescribing nurse, doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, seek medical advice about the correct dosage. You should always finish the full course of treatment to avoid reinfection.

If you forget to take a dose of clindamycin cream during the course of treatment, take it as soon as you remember and carry on with the treatment as before. If it is already time for your next dose of the cream when you remember, take the original dose and continue with your treatment as usual from then on. Do not double-up or take more than one dose of the cream to make up for a missed dose.

Ingredients of Dalacin

The active ingredient in Clindamycin Cream is clindamycin phosphate, at a strength of 2% w/w.

Other ingredients in the cream are: sorbitan stearate, benzyl alcohol, propylene glycol, polysorbate 60, stearic acid, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, water and liquid paraffin.

Side Effects

As with all medicines, there is a chance you will experience some side effects as a result of using clindamycin cream.

Stop using the cream straight away and seek immediate medical attention from a doctor or from the Accident and Emergency Department of your local hospital if you experience the following side effects:

  • Severe, long-lasting or bloody diarrhoea, sometimes with a fever or stomach pains (the sign of bowel inflammation: an uncommon but serious side effect following antibiotic treatment)
  • Hives or a measle-like rash on the skin
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing (signs of an allergic reaction)

The following side effects are reported in around 1 to 10 users of the cream:

  • Local skin inflammation and irritation
  • Irritation of the vagina or cervix

These will affect less than 1 in 100 people using the cream:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach pains, constipation or an upset stomach
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Headache

Make sure to always keep your nurse, doctor or pharmacist aware of any side effects you might be having as a result of using clindamycin cream. If you react badly in any way to the cream, if any symptoms worsen or if you notice side effects that have not been listed on this page, seek immediate medical attention.

If you have a question about this service, please email info@dred.com with the question, and one of our doctors will get back to you within 24 hours.
