What is Enalapril?

Enalapril is a treatment for hypertension or high blood pressure. Enalapril is one of a group of hypertension treatments called the ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. To avoid serious health implications such as heart failure, liver failure and stroke that may occur if your blood pressure rises too high, Enalapril can be taken. Enalapril can also be used to treat patients after heart failure.

How does Enalapril work?

Enalapril is one of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It stops your body creating the hormone angiotensin II. Enalapril inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme and this action causes the smooth muscle in your blood vessels to relax, thereby opening them to increase blood flow. Enalapril also reduces the amount of water put back into your blood by the kidneys resulting in decreased blood pressure

Should I alter my diet in any way whilst on Enalapril?

There are no specific foods which will alter how Enalapril works. However, you should be aware that your high blood pressure might be caused by a diet high in salt, cholesterol and fat; the treatment would work better if you change your diet for the better as well to reduce your blood pressure.

Can I drink whilst taking Enalapril?

Ideally, no. The alcohol will exacerbate any side effects such as feeling faint or dizzy.

What does the treatment look like?

The tablets are round and white with the dosage marked on one side, and a break line marked on the other.

Can I take pain killers as normal whilst on Enalapril?

Aspirin and ibuprofen interact with Enalapril. You should use alternative painkillers if and when you need them. Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

When should I take Enalapril?

You may experience side effects such as dizziness and feeling tired or faint after you take your first dosage. You should take your first dose at night as this will make any side effects less noticeable.

Who usually takes Enalapril?

Enalapril must be prescribed. Enalapril should be taken by people over 18 only, unless otherwise recommended by a doctor. Over 65’s can take Enalapril; however, they may experience increased sensitivity to the drug. You should check the “Warnings” tab for comprehensive advice as to who can or can’t take Enalapril.

How do I take Enalapril?

There are four different dosages available: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20 mg. You should take a tablet at the recommended dosage once per day with a glass of water and with or without food.

Generally, your starting dose will be 2.5mg or 5mg, however, this may be raised depending on your response to the treatment.

Children must not use Enalapril.

Over 65’s and anyone with renal impairment should take the lower suggested dose of 2.5mg.

What is in Enalapril tablets?

The active substance in Enalapril maleate; there will be 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg or 20mg of this in a tablet, depending on the tablet strength. The tablets also contain lactose monohydrate, maize starch and glyceryl palmitostearate.
