What is Losartan?

Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. This type of medication blocks particular hormone receptors in the body, thus preventing the hormone angiotensin II from acting on your blood vessels. Blocking these receptors means angiotensin, a hormone which increases your blood pressure, can not fulfill its function. As a result, taking Losartan helps relax your blood vessels and improves the blood flow through your body.

Losartan is prescription-only blood pressure medication. It is usually prescribed to patients when other hypertension drugs, such as ACE inhibitors, do not show the desired effect. In addition to its common use as hypertension medication, it is sometimes prescribed to diabetes patients in order to prevent damage to the kidneys. It is also used as a preventative treatment in patients with heart problems, in order to reduce the risk of stroke. In some cases, Losartan serves as a treatment for chronic heart failure.

Are there any contraindications?

Losartan tablets are not available as an over-the-counter treatment. You can only take Losartan if your GP has provided you with a prescription. Prior to taking Losartan, it is important that you discuss your medical history with your doctor. Please ensure you let you doctor know about any treatment you have recently received. There are various contraindications to taking Losartan, including pregnancy, breastfeeding and liver disease. If you are allergic to Losartan or any of the ingredients, you must not take the tablets.

Please make sure you mention to your GP if you have ever suffered from swelling of the face, throat or tongue or have problems with your kidneys. It is also important that your doctor knows about any recent illnesses involving vomiting and diarrhoea. Heart problems, increased potassium levels in your blood and hyperaldosteronism, a syndrome affecting your adrenal gland, can also be contraindications.

Who should not take Losartan tablets?

You should not take Losartan tablets when pregnant or trying for a baby. It is also not recommended that you continue treatment with Losartan while you are breastfeeding. Your doctor will be able to tell you how to manage your blood pressure during pregnancy and the months following childbirth.

How can I order Losartan from DrEd?

DrEd offers a convenient service for repeat prescriptions. You will need to fill in a short questionnaire, which our doctor uses to assess, whether we can provide you with Losartan tablets. DrEd only issues repeat prescriptions for Losartan, saving you a trip to the GP practice to pick up your prescription. However, you still need to see your GP for regular check-ups. Your GP needs to monitor your blood pressure to ensure your treatment is effective. From time to time, it may be necessary to adjust your medication and dosage, so it is important you visit your local surgery on a regular basis. DrEd can provide repeat prescriptions only to patients who have been taking Losartan for at least three months and whose blood pressure is under control.

Do Losartan tablets interact with other drugs?

Like most medicines, Losartan can interact with other types of medication. Taking other drugs at the same time can lower or increase the effectiveness of Losartan and lead to severe side effects. Interactions can occur when taking antidepressants or antipsychotic drugs, lithium, certain types of anti-inflammatory painkillers as well as high-dose diuretics. Losartan tablets contain potassium and should therefore not be combined with potassium supplements or other medications containing potassium. Your GP will tell you which treatments you can take while being treated with Losartan.

Which Losartan side effects do I need to watch out for?

Certain mild side effects such as dizziness commonly occur in patients who take Losartan, especially during the first few days of treatment. Severe side effects are rare. However, if you experience facial swellings or an itchy rash you may be allergic to Losartan, in which case it is important to stop treatment immediately. Please seek medical help if you notice signs of allergy, experience palpitations, jaundice, anaemia or are having trouble passing urine. Sudden abdominal pain or back pain can be a sign of an inflammation of the pancreas, so please make sure you see a doctor as soon as possible, should these symptoms occur. The same applies, if your urine changes colour or you are suffering from muscle pains.

Which Losartan dose is right for me?

Losartan tablets are available in 25, 50 and 100mg doses. Which dosage you require depends on your condition and which other medication you are currently taking. Your GP will set the exact dosage you need and adjust it if necessary. The most common dosage is 50mg per day. Elderly patients or those suffering from liver problems may require a lower dosage, as do children. Please ensure you follow your doctor’s instructions and do not exceed the recommended intake.

How is Losartan taken?

Losartan tablets can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. You should aim to take your tablet at the same time every day. If you forget to take a dose, please skip the missed tablet and continue with the next tablet at your usual time. Please do not take two tablets on the same day to make up for the dose you missed.

What do Losartan tablets contain?

Each Losartan tablet contains, depending on the dosage, 25, 50 or 100mg of the active ingredient Losartan. Additional components include polyoxyethylene stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica, sodium stearyl fumarate, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose and titanium dioxide (E171). If you think you may be allergic to any of the ingredients mentioned above, please ask a doctor before taking the first tablet of your course.
